Send files from PC to TV

Hi, If anyone can help with this problem Iwould be grateful. Please use simple terms as I'm not technically minded! I want to send images and sounds from my computer to my TV but don't know how! I was told that I just needed an hdmi cable and it would all work perfectly once connected, however, that isn't the case! I have the cable but neither computer or TV are responding to each other in any way! Are there any settings that need checking?

When you connect your pc to a tv, it means that you are using the tv as a monitor. I don't know what your tv has, but on my tv on the remote I have to press the Source button and change the input Source to pc (some of the choices I have are tv (the inbuilt freeview), my Humax Foxsat box, USB port, PC and whatever else I choose to connect at any given time.
