Windows 7 Startup Disc Problem

Hello! I have a desktop PC with 2 x 1 GB discs which has a startup problem. When I start the PC up I get a screen Saying SMART status bad, Backup and Replace. Press F1 to run SETUP. When I do this, I get the ASUS EFI BIOS UTILITY screen giving various options. Pressing the "Boot Menu" button gives me 6 options. Pressing the SATA ST option results in the message "A disc read error occurred press CTRL + ALT + del to restart" on a black screen. I have a Windows 7 repair disc, but how do I get the PC to default to it when the DVD drive is not an option on the "Boot Menu". I have a Windows backup on an external drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need to know your motherboard, but if you have a CD/DVD installed and working it will be listed. The new BIOS can be a little tricky at first finding your way around. You could try tapping F8 or F12 after you have pressed the power button as one of them should bring up the boot menu.

I might add that if the C drive which will have your operating system on has failed then the setup disk is not going to help.

"I have a desktop PC with 2 x 1 GB discs"

That can't be right, surely?

Anyway, the error message you see is a warning that your C drive is going to fail. It may stumble on for a short while, but total failure is ultimately inevitable.

For that reason there's little point in trying to load a repair disc. Presumably you have already made backups of your data files, and you have installation discs for your software? It's time to start with a new hard drive.

The only solution was to replace the hard disc (1Tb not 1Gb as I said earlier) I have ow on that ad everything is good once more. Thanks for your input.
