why wont my pc startup

why wont my notebook pc get past password signin at times or even past the windows startup page at others the screen just goes to black and it takes me to remove the battery to shut it off the power button wont shut it off thanks for any help solving this problem

See if it works ok in safe mode by tapping F8 or F5 as the computer starts.
