My computer using windows 7 has developed a problem where sometimes it gets as far as the blue welcome screen and before rhe wallpaper screen appears it shuts down and restarts where Get a screeen message that windows had not shut down properly and to select start windows normally. After doing this it is ok till the next time.

Have you tried tapping the F8 key as it is booting and selecting "last known good configuration" then enter? This should tell whether the registry or other minor problem is the cause.
