Change icons in My Pictures

how do I change the icons in My Pictures to a mini version of the photo rather than the default non descript form that is there now?

Open 'My Pictures' and at the top right find the 'Change your view' selector; from the dropdown list make your choice. If you expect to be able to have icons similar to XP, as far as I know they are not available.

As per johndrew ....... just select Medium icons in the drop-down list, then it will be just like XP.
