New HDD - where are my emails?

Due to catastrophic HDD failure I have had to install a new HDD. I have loaded Windows 7 and Live mail and thus far it is running OK. Now I need to get to my old emails and contacts, etc, but don't know where they are stored in a recent copy of the old HDD that I have on an external drive. (I copied the whole C drive)Unfortunately traditional backup was not made of the email and contacts files before the old drive crashed. I assume if I can find them I can copy them into my reloaded fresh versions of Windows 7 and Live Mail?
I've searched in vain for help from MS but as usual it's all tied up in terminology I don't understand and hidden by Windows for unknown reasons!
Can anybody help?
