Using 'F' function keys for saving key strings

How do I allocate a string of characters to a function key, either temporarily or permanently? When sending say a utube addresses out, sometimes have 3-4-or 5 addresses of interest to send. CTRL 'C' or 'V' is good but only stores one set of characters. I used to be able to put such strings of characters onto the F1-F12 function keys when I worked as a typesetter. Nice and easy! Thanks for any help
