IE8 unusual behaviour

My system is W7 SP1 with Internet Explorer 8.
Just recently after ‘Googling’ and right clicking on one of the results to open in a new tab, (e.g. www.surreycc.gov.uk/_data/assets/pdffile/0011/169535/Section3-SocialCare.pdf) IE8 has opened but almost immediately an error message window has appeared entitled “Microsoft Visual C + + Runtime Library” with a message “Program: C:\Progrm Files \Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE. This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application’s support team for further information.”
Clicking the OK button of the error window results in a message stating “This tab has been recovered. A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab.” The page then reopens but with the same error message window. At this point the whole page is “dead” and clicking anywhere causes a ‘ding’ sound but no action. Even trying to close the tab by clicking on the red X at top right fails and the only way is to ‘kill’ the application by running Task Manager, selecting the appropriate line and then ‘End Task’. I have noticed that Task Manager shows TWO instances of the application and if only one of them is selected and ‘End Task’ then the tab is closed and reopened as before. It is necessary to select BOTH instances of the application and then ‘End Task’ to finally close the tab. Eventually the tab gives two options – ‘Go to your home page’ or ‘Try to return to surreycc.gov.uk’ but clicking on the latter just causes a repetition of all I have described above.
This has happened on more than one site, which leads me to believe that something on my system is causing this rather than there being an error on the site being visited. Has anyone had this experience and can anyone offer an explanation and a solution to the problem?
