Windows 7 - No sound

I had to re-install Windows 7 this week. Everything is fine; all my programmes are working OK except there is no sound. There is a red x by the speaker symbol on the task bar which says 'No speakers or headphones are plugged in'. My speakers are working OK and I have tried them in the back & front sockets on my machine. Friend suggested I might have pressed the 'mute' button but I can't even find that!! Any help appreciated

Hello
To find the mute button....
Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then, under Sound, click Adjust system volume.
Move the slider up to increase the volume.
Make sure the Mute button isn't turned on (i.e. there is no red cross)
Also Click the Start button, then control panel, hardware and sound, under sound cick on manage audio advices and make sure that your speakers are checked.
