Lost Down Arrow Choices on Desktop etc

Hi...I'm a newbie on Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) I've suddenly lost the view options (Large/medium/small icons, List, Detail etc) given by the down arrow at top right. For example, when I click on 'Desktop'>down arrow all I get it a blank 'roll-down' and obviously no choices! Can someone help me sort this one out? Many thanks
