Windows 7 Backup

I recently got a new PC with Windows 7 and have just started tweaking the settings. I have just reached the 'Backup' set up. Because I only have one internal HDD, it's selected my external 1T HDD as the chosen one.

Has anyone else set this section up, as I am not a little concerned. The disk in question isn't empty and I need reasuring that this backup - every Sunday at 6 pm - isn't going to overwrite anything else on the disk?

It's not best practice to use a drive that you have data on for backup purposes. You have a couple of choices:

1) You could partition either the HDD on your new machine (split the drive into two, one named partition for your backups, and one for your own data)

2) Partition the external drive in the same way.

Another, far better solution (and since the PC is new) would be to use Acronis True Image. It's not free, but it's the best backup software money can buy.

It will split your Internal or external drive for you, so that you don't have to do so yourself, and provided you make incremental backups weekly, it will restore your system to EXACTLY the way it was at the time of the last backup you made...Acronis can be found at:

Windows Backup is just fine for what you want. No it wont overwrite any of your existing data but a seperate partition would be tidier.

Thanx for that, after reading what Crosstrainer2 said, I thought I was going to have to splash the cash and to be honest, after buying this PC I haven't got that much left in the kitty.
