Two "Program Files" ?

I have just noticed on my Win7 (C) HDD,
"Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)".
I have the 64bit version installed.
Can someone explain for me please, thanks.

'Program files' is for 64 bit applications and 'Program Files (x86)' is for 32 bit software. I'm not sure why they need to be seperated (probably some technical issue), but that's just the way it is!

Thanks. So I imagine it's for W7 to "run" 32bit apps which wouldn't normally run on 64bit.
