Format Hard Drive For Windows 7

I want to do a clean install for Windows 7. I would prefer to format my hard drive before loading Windows 7 as in days of old but is this necessary now? From what I have read so far you just put the Windows 7 disc in whilst running Vista and follow the instruction to get a clean install but does this fully format your hard drive at the same time.? Have I understood this correctly?
