Is it worth upgrading from XP on my laptop, if only for future support.
Its work machine with 1 Gb ram and I seldom use it for graphics etc.

I would stick with XP till you update your PC. Security updates will continue and it is a very good operating system.
W7 needs a lower spec. machine compared to Vista and I am running the RC copy on a netbook,1.6mhz processor and 1gb of ram, quite happily. I certainly would not buy it as XP suits me fine.

The biggest problem that you will have to upgrade the laptop from Windows XP to
Windows 7 would be the Windows 7 Drivers for the laptop
Windows 7 OS is base around Vista
1GB of memory is the minimum amount for Windows 7 so you could find that the
computer is running slow and some of the hardware drivers not available for your laptop
As “Quiet Life” said stick with XP till you update your PC.
XP Security updates will continue and it is a very good operating system.
