Many dedicated film scanners will not run in a 64 bit environment and the "Nikon Coolscan V" is one such scanner. However, I did manage to make it work in the 64 bit version of Windows 7 using third party scanning software, Vuescan from - click here .

The method I used requires that you do not install either the NikonScan software nor the Nikon drivers and it goes as follows.

Step one - Attach the scanner to the PC and ensure that it is switched on.

Step two - Install the latest copy of Vuescan ( 8.5 ).

Step Three - Open "Device Manager" and Right click on "Nikon LS 50".

Step Four - Choose "Update Driver Software" and, in the box that appears, choose "Browse my computer for driver software".

Step Five - Navigate to the "Vuescan" folder, make sure that "Include subfolders" is ticked and click next.

Step Six - If your as lucky as I was, everything will install without a hitch and your good to go.

It's reasonable to believe that the "Nikon Scan" software may be installed after the event, and may work - I don't know, I prefer to use Vuescan as its superior to NikonScan which is supplied with the scanner. It's also possible that this method would work with 64 bit Vista and XP.
