Aside from the expensive Macbooks and UK avoiding Lenovo U400, does anyone know of any laptops that are made of alluminium?

Aluminium? I'm not sure why you would want a laptop made of that. It's easily scratched and dented. Magnesium alloy is a better bet if strength and low-weight is what you're after. Take a look at Panasonic's ToughBooks.
Carbon fibre can be incorporated into laptop bodies to provide a lot of strength coupled with lightness. Lenovo Thinkpads utilise this technology.

The reason for the metal shell (whether it's aluminium or magnesium alloy) is purely a style thing rather than strength or weight. I like the Macbook's but they're out of my budget. The Lenovo U400 promised to be the the ideal solution but it's not UK bound so I'm seeing who else makes metal shell laptops.
