I have just started a small company and am using Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2008 as suggested in another thread and see that i offers a monthly payroll services for £19.99 per month, has any one used this service? and if so how good/accurate is it? also can it deal with both directors/employee salary and directors dividends?.

Any feed back would usefull

To be honest, if I was back in that situation, I would go for a Sage package. It's the universally accepted system for a lot of accountants and would cause little or no hassle. Using other software could incur extra charges from an accountant.

Sage is the one to go for.

If its a small company ( I don't know how many employees you have) I would recommend Iris Payroll, about £230 a year or less depending on number of employees.

I can also recommend Able Internet Payroll - this company offers a payroll service over the net, so theres no software to download, and the amount of paperwork is minimal.

Both Iris and Able are certified by HMRC, and both handle all aspects of PAYE, Tax, NI, Student loans, directors pay, etc, as required by HMRC.

Sage is top dog when it comes to Payroll software, but the price is prohibitive I think for a small business.

Has a complete list of HMRC approved payroll suppliers, and there are many.

The program that your Accountants are familiar with, will prove to be cheapest in the first year of use and progressively more so in the following years.

Their Fee will be horrendous if you expect them to use Software that they do not have staff trained on.

I work in the payroll industry and fully agree with the previous posts - whichever payroll software you decide to use it must be compliant and approved by the HMRC. I don't believe MS Office Accounting Express 2008 has been certified by them.

Unless you are a glutton for punishment, I would seriously look at using a payroll bureau - perhaps at your local accountant.

It's not just the cost of the software, it's the time involved and the cost and hassle if you get it wrong.

Bear in mind you should get a quote that will include submitting all the normal monthly and yearly returns, P35s P45s P60's etc.

We spend £65 a month for a small company payroll with 12 employees that includes bank transfers, payslips and all the forms. Well worth it for the time and hassle.

This is what I did for the 24 years that I ran my business.

My Accountants had a couple of Specialist Clerks who handled all the related items, including all forms and contacts with the relevant authorities. Their charge would have been similar to yours "Version 1". All I had to do was Email them the Hours of those who were paid that way, and they Mailed me a synopsis every week.

Well i have got sage, still trying to get my head round it. The payroll online is the best for me, local qoutes run from around £40 pm to over £70 p/m, bearing in mind that at the present there are only 2 employess (me and one other) it seems silly to pay all that money each month. The online way really is simple now that I have got all the required info from the inland revenue (they also said it would be the best way). its pretty much fool proof for me at this stage in the business when all costs matter. The business has lots of payments in and out each week(but unfortunatly not a lot of profit yet)but thanks for all the advice no doubt as the company takes off (or not) i will have loads of other questions!!!!

I have to take you to task over your dismissal of Able Internet Payroll.

"It's not just the cost of the software, it's the time involved and the cost and hassle if you get it wrong."
Able Internet Payroll has a rollback facility in case of errors.

"Bear in mind you should get a quote that will include submitting all the normal monthly and yearly returns, P35s P45s P60's etc."
Does all that and much more. Why would it get HMRC approval if it didn't do such a thing?!

"We spend £65 a month for a small company payroll with 12 employees that includes bank transfers, payslips and all the forms. Well worth it for the time and hassle."
For a small employer with that many employees, that seems a lot of money. There are far cheaper options out there.
I know 5 employers using Able (including myself), they are quite happy with the software and have had no problems at all.
