Galaxy Ace, Photos Gone From Gallery

My friend’s photos in the photo gallery on his Galaxy Ace have all disappeared onto a file; the photos appear on the file as thumbnails but will not open as full photos, any ideas why? And how to get them back to the gallery. Regards Rose and Ale Man
