I have a nokia N8 and when in work i can pick up wifi in most places where as ppl with the iphone4/4s struggle to pick it up in places. when looking for a new phone what spec do i have to look for if i want good wifi connection?

Possibly location of aerial for wifi and phone design rather than specs.
