Android updates for Samsung Nexus S

I have just received a refurbished handset from the Carphone Warehouse after they screwed up a repair job on my usual handset.
It currently has Android Version 2.3.3 and I would like to upgrade to 4.1.1 (or whatever the latest version is)
My question is can I do this in 'one hit' or do I need to install 2.3.6 and then 4.0 before I apply the jelly bean update?
Can someone help with what I need to do to get the handset up to date?
thanks in advance for your help

My tablet was in gingerbread and uograded to ICS in one go OTA. I should think it's perfectly Ok for you to do. However, I am not an expert but just giving you my experience. My Samsung note was also on gingerbread and upgraded to ICS using Kies with no probs. Hope that helps
