Galaxy S Recovery Mode

I'm trying to upgrade to Gingerbread and to do this I need to root my phone. Although it was, I thought, unbranded, I bought it from O2 and they have installed their own software.
I have all the files I need, but every procedure I have seen says reboot the phone by holding down the the volume and home buttons and then pressing the power button.
This does not work for me in any of a dozen or so configurations - the phone simply starts up as normal.
Anybody know of another way of rebooting or getting into recovery mode?
Running Froyo at the moment which I installed without any problem.

Thanks for the reply but

I too had initial difficulty getting into recovery/download mode with my galaxy tab, it's important to press the up end of the volume button, it's too easy to press the whole volume button without realising.

I must have done this a dozen or more times yesterday following the various methods thrown up by Google.
I think I might have got it right at least once.
One of the methods actually calls for the whole button to be pressed, and pressing the down button should actually give a different result, reboot I think, but still had no effect on my device.

Are you sure that you need to root the phone? I connected my phone to Kies and it did it (but I am with Orange).

Yes.
I've been on to the O2 forums, and they have no plans to make Gingerbread available anytime soon.
I need to debrand.

I read that O2 would get the upgrade in May. Have you tried through Kies? It should tell you whether the upgrade is ready.
BTW the differences so far on my phone are minor.

Kies only tells me I'm up to date, and shows the latest O2 update (Froyo).
On the O2 forums there are quotes from O2, in answer to people's queries, that they have no plans to introduce a Gingerbread update.
What you perhaps read is that O2 are now installing Gingerbread on their new phones.
