How can I resurrect old phone?

I have a Nokia 3110 Type NHE-8 code 0500810 which is custom fitted into a 10yr old BMW I bought recently.
The previous owner didn't use the phone so doesn't know what network it is on.
I have tried many different SIM cards in it but either get a blank screen or a "SIM Rejected" notice.
Setting it to manual mode for channel selection shows that it detects Vodafone and Cellnet as available, when an O2 card is in it, but still won't let me top up or anything other than menu functions.
I am not putting £10 in on the hope of getting a connection, nor can I afford to spend £150 on a new car kit to fit my usual phone.

take it to town and get it unblocked, then see if it works.

Had it unblocked by two outfits, but one said not sure because did not have software for that model.
Just remembered, have an old CD with unblocking codes on it, will try that.
Meanwhile have bought for £1 each a fresh set of SIM cards to see if they work.
Otherwise will sling it away and forget the whole thing, go back to putting my Nokia 5800 in a holder on the dash, but work work automatically through radio.
