how to trace my mobiles location from IMEI number?

Ive heard that I can trace my stolen/lost mobile phone using its IMEI number, which is displayed under my phones battery. I can supposedly even trace my phone even if the sim card is replaced by a thief. There are a few 'pay for only' services available on the internet, but I am wondering if anybody knows of any free pc internet tools that could simply work out my phones location if I entered its IMEI number? Or as a last resort, the best websites to use? thanks for any help
