iPhone problems

Dear all,
How do you prevent an iPhone (3G) being irresponsive or freezing regularly? For example, my telephone function would not work yesterday. Sometimes, when I am in an application, it closes automatically and exits to the main screen. Or there are times when the application takes so long to respond but when I try to quit it, I failed. Furthermore, I am not able to switch off my iPhone for some reason.
Much appreciation for any help or advice.
Thanks,
Benjamin.

Connect it to iTunes and update it to the latest version(3.1.2) to solve all your problems.
