Have tried 'restore settings', but this has not worked - any other suggestions please?

Okay - sorted.

Having reset/restored etc - discovered a little 'on, off' switch at the side of the phone.

Unbelievable - my sister sat playiing with the thing last night - case on, case off, etc and must have flicked switch.

Ah well ....
