Smartphone connection to voice control

For around a year I have connected via Bluetooth a Nokia E71 to my Fords factory fit voice control(VC). This has always connected automatically on turning on the Sony CD/Radio.
Yesterday I tried to set up the same thing with my new HTC-S710 Smartphone. The phone paired to the VC with no problem and both devices can see each other. However, when I tried turning on the VC it started but the flashed up a message saying "Phone unavailable".
Then today it stopped saying this message and allowed me to connect and use the phone by entering the menu and manually connecting. However, it will not automaticaaly connect - only manually and no longer even seems to try to connect automatically.
I would be grateful for any guidance of where I might be going wrong.
