Can I use PC sound files as ringtones?

My Panasonic EB-VS6 mobile phone is Bluetooth-enabled, and I've just got around to buying a USB Bluetooth dongle for my PC, in order to upload photos from the phone to my PC.
But it occurs to me that I can presumably transfer material from the PC to the phone, too.
Does this mean that I could send a sound file from my PC to my phone and use it for a ringtone? If so, what format should the file be in? Can I convert any sound file to the correct format in Windows Media Player 11?

First of all check phone specs as to what media files are supported. Normally for current models mp3 is OK.

I've hunted right through the phone manual, and believe it or not there's no list of supported sound file formats.
When I look at the list of available ringtones already within the phone, most file names carry the suffix .mmf although a few seem to be .m4a
Does that mean anything to you?

I've got a lot of learning to do from all your answers! So I'll close the thread now and start trying to make sense of it all.
I'm very grateful for your help.
