HTC 3G when I don't want it on 4550

The HTC 4550 has a 3G card and WiFi. I loaded a connection manager where I can enter my log on credentials for WiFi so in future all I need ot do is press a button and the manager logs me on. Howover, even though I have WiFi activated when the connection manager tries to reach the internet 3G fores up and I get the wrong log in page which will keep 3G up. I suspect this is something to do with the dev ice as without the manager unless I manually log in to WiFi the 3G automatically fires up to get an interent connection - seems liek the device is set to if I want an interent connection to preferentially fire up 3G. Anyone know how I can over ride this? the HTC has Windows Mobile 6 pro
