external hard drive copying fail... files gone....

Hi
This was a while ago so my memory is a bit sketchy and I havent addressed the problem since it happened!
I was copying about 200gb worth of backed up data from my external HD onto my old pc (I wanted to format the external HD) - so it was kind of a 'double back up'.
I left it copying for a long time and after a while the message came up 'not enough room on (pc) HD for all data'
It copied a fair chunk, but as I check it all I began to realise that a lot was missing. A lot. Eg it had copied half a folders worth of videos instead of the full amount.
The thing is I believe I 'moved" the files, not copied, [not control C]
so the files appear to not be on my external HD anymore
but they arent on the old PC either...any thoughts where the hell they went? are they in some sort of digital limbo?
I might have deleted the folders on the external HD after the copy, but i cant remember. I have not formatted the external HD.
any thoughts/suggestions/help? thanks!
