freeing up memory for backups

Deleting old backups from my external hard drive doesn't seem to free up any memory for new backups.

Can anyone help please?

I'm running Vista Home Basic 32 bit.

Of course, what I mean is "freeing up disk space". Sorry!

Silly me! I forgot to clear the Recycle Bin.
