Monitor turns off

My monitor turns itself off within a few minutes of startup on my Acer desktop, 'no vga signal'. I have two monitors, Acer and Asus, it happens with both. I have Vista on my aging laptop, both work with that. One is 19"' the other 21", and I recently replaced the video card.

Check in Control Panel - Power Options - to see if Monitor is going into sleep mode as opposed to switching itself off.

"I recently replaced the video card."
I suggest that you check the card to make sure it is properly seated in its slot. Then watch the screen as your computer starts and make sure the card is being picked up during the boot sequence.

Thanks for the advice, chaps, but the PC has now crashed completely - must have been trying to tell me something!
