Vista laptop slow response and freezing

My partners laptop running Vista is becoming slower and freezing so regular. when on face book it often says 'page unresponsive do you want to kill the page'.The laptop is mainly used for viewing pictures, FB and general net use and e-mails. Whilst this is occurring you can here the HD constantly working.Any ideas to the cause.

download and run ccleaner (all legit and most od us use it)to clear out the crud from the machine to see if that helps,back up your data as it sounds like the hard drive may soon fail.alternativly back up your data (always a good idea)and reinstall windows from scratch to factory settings,hope that helps.
