windows vista update hangs and will not boot up laptop

i have installed updates to Windows Vista on a Toshiba laptop [Equium].. The installation installs to Stage 3 then reboots [goes back to the beginning of the bootup process] and continues to hang, not allowing access beyond this point,, even in safe mode. i tried to boot from the restore disk but it isn't being recognised, the reboot gets to the same point [Stage 3 of the update] and then begins the cycle again.
Any practical [and well detailed] suggestions for a non-tekkie?

When you are in safe mode have you tried clicking on
"last known configuration" ?

Tried this - same problem recurs.
I've tried selecting the boot from CD option but it doesn't respond and boots normally.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried all of the methods in this article, including changing the boot order in bios which may allow the recovery and repair disk to work>
