Vista only boots to Safemode

I can only boot into safemode,luckily I can use networking choice for internet access. Is there anything I can do to get back booting normally short of a recovery install? -- I have several choice applications that I can't replace.

Well done - quite a marathon and quite a learning curve.

It would be very useful if you could set up restore points - perhaps onto a flash drive or, if you have one, an external hard drive.

I have just come across this article for getting vista out of MSconfig selective start-up mode - it makes interesting reading.
