Windows Vista Crash Log Help Needed Please!

Hello. I'm a technogimp, sadly, but my computer crashed the other day (due to the mains being pulled out accidentally) and I would like to know at what time this happened. (There is a very dull reason why, which I shan't go into...)
I've Googled a bit and did the following:
Start, right click Computer, Manage, Event Viewer
but then a warning message pops up saying "Event log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." (Also, it then changes the Event Viewer button to "Event Viewer (Local)", if this is relevant.)
And so I'm stuck. Any ideas?
Thanks!

In Services you should have 2 items listed - Windows Event Collector and Windows Event Log You can right click on both and from the drop down list select properties - Change start up type to Automatic then click on start the service - then apply - ok.
You can access Services via Control Panel - Administrative Tools or from the Start Orb - type in the search box or from the run command "services.msc"
