son completed windows update 18/04/11 and prompted to restart. when tried to restart told "windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer" and says could be caused by unplugging storage device like external usb while in use or faulty hardware such as cd-rom drive or hard drive which is failing. no external drives had been used for ages so cant be that. son has tried recovery from vista disc as suggested on his forums but when restart as prompted get same screen. Says status: 0xc00000e9 info: an unexpected I/O error has occurred. system details, toshiba laptop, vsita, firefox + noscript, mcafee, no previous problems. Cant get any screen up to try anything like scans, cant get safe mode. laptop v urgently needed - please can someone help, thanks.

Has he set the cd drive as the first boot option when trying the recovery disc?
