Start Menu will not start in Vista

Hi,
I have Vista with Service Pack installed and now find that although boot up takes me as far as the user selection screen, once the user selection has been made I find myself with a completely black screen, devoid of wallpaper, tray or any start buttons. I can start programs through CTRL ALT Delete and browsing to find and start the program as Start New task. The last time that the Start Menu worked was when a trojan was detected AVG (fully updated) and consigned to the virus vault. Laptop was shut down correctly. The laptop was shut down and the next time startup reveals the blank screen.

Can you get a friend to burn the iso file to disc? Then you should be able to boot from CD or DVD..

I've found that if I use ImgBurn instead of Roxio, I've been able to burn to the dvd ok. So having changed the boot order through F8 and F9(which oddly only gives 'Option 2 DVD drive' or 'Option 3 hard drive') I then get what must be the recovery disc and it offers the following System Recovery Options: 1. Startup Repair - when selected detected no faults, 2. System Restore - when selected no effect was made, 3. Windows Complete PC Restore - when selected it requested backup discs which I don't have, unless I use the set I originally made when the laptop was new, 4. Memory Diagnostic Tool - when selected no fault was detected, 5. Comand Prompt - not relevant to the current problem

Any ideas would be appreciated,

I was hoping that system restore would have worked. Hopefully someone else may have a better idea.
