Explorer & Messenger Black screens?

A friend has given me his HP Pavillion dv7-1428ca to try and fix. It has been behaving strangely the last few days on Explorer and Messenger, The background is black and some parts of the screen are where you would expect them to be but it is almost impossible to click on what you want.
System restore is only showing one restore point for yesterday which is no help. He says he has no rescue disks, I found a download from HP to create a recovery memory stick but this will not run as you are only allowed attempt and making a recovery media and this has already been done!!!
As it is an Amd 64 processor is it ok to install a 32 but operating system if it comes down to it? He can contact HP and pay for a recovery disk, not sure if it's a complication that he bought it in Canada.
Cheers.
Barry.

Here are a few things you can try:
1) Restore from a restore point.
2) Run virus scanner.
3) Defrag the drive.
4) Update MOBO bios.
Still facing the problem fix these issues with repair installation if you have disc. or call a technicians click here
