WD External Hard Drive prevents boot up

I had problems in that when my new external hard drive was connected and pc was powered off the system would not restart I got the Advent logo then nothing almost as if the pc was confused.
Whilst in this state it occured to me that my new external hard drive may be responsible so I disconnected the usb cable and the system booted up as normal.
Following a quick google search I found a thread saying the power status may be responsible so via the control panel I changed the power plan from balanced to power saver and under this plan via change plan settings went into advanced and changed the usb setting for this device under selective suspend setting from enabled to disabled.
All is wonderful with my pc now but to be honest not really sure what this suspend setting does and why I have cured my issue.
If anyone with enough knowledge could be kind enough to explain and perhaps let me know what the down side (if any) is the consequence of my actions,
Many thanks, Robin

A lot of computers do get confused when booting if an external USB hard drive is connected. I think this is due to the computer being set to boot from USB device first and not being able to find the OS. You could try changing the boot sequence in the bios or leave the drive disconnected when booting.

Boot setting needs to be HD first then DVD drive after that USB drives or disable the rest.

Thats great Kevscar but I only have limited knowledge so is there an easy way to change the boot setting or is it ok how it is working at moment as it loads up quickly and works fine but not sure if there will be any long term problems affecting other things in future
