Back up after new install of Vista

My friend used the Vista backup onto a hard drive before having Vista re installed

He then backed up the new installation.

On the hard drive therer are two back ups one under the previous name of the computer Fujitsu and the new ones under john.

To restore files only the new back up shows although both are there
Can he rename the old one and get the files back?

It is the e mail addresses that are needed.
