I have just bought a new mouse for my pc and after install I got a black screen and Vista requested re activation so I went online only to get an unable to verify if genuine notice . Funnily enough , I am still getting updates and some , but not all , things still work . I know it is genuine as I still have the setup disk in its box and its been fine for over a year.

I'm very surprised that installing a new mouse triggered a re-activation. However, it's probably best if you call Microsoft's activation line and explain the problem.
If automatic online re-activation fails, follow the screens that take you through to activating Windows by phone.
