I went into Windows Task Manager and I was atonished to find out that there were 20 instances of svchost.exe. They taking up large amounts of my 4gb of ram. Is there something I can do this? Also I ran a full Mcafee Viruscan and my laptops clean.

Perfectly normal. svchost.exe hosts Windows Services, used for background tasks & activities. One instance of svchost for each service, generally. This refers to XP but applies to Vista/W7 too; click here
