Vista freezing and locking up

Over the past few weeks my Vista HP comp has started to freeze when doing very routine things like opening windows explorer or word. The little circle sits there spinning round and will go on for ever if I don't take drastic action, task manager will indicate an application is not responding but won't shut it down despite repeated clicking. The only option is a hard shutdown with the button on the comp. This is happening more and more. I have nothing unusual on my system runing AVG 8 - just tried to upgrade to 8.5 but it hung and needeed a hard boot. Anyone any suggestions please?

The software for my Netgear sc101 storage area network. This device is slated on all forums for causing problems. I removed it and the problem disappeared
