"No Audio Output (not Input as I said before)

I have had a bad hair day!!!
I meant Output not iInput in my previous posting!!
So here it is again.
I have a three year old Asus A6000VM laptop which came with Windows XP and just reformatted the hard drive and installed Vista Business. No problems and all fine except that I get the message above and have no sound.
The Microsoft driver is recognised in Device Manager (with an exclamation mark) and, in the General tab, status is cannot start (Code 10).
I have tried disabling and un-installing and re-starting from both sleep and shut down mode but no success.
I have also down loaded the Realtek AC'97 driver for Vista. This is now shown in Programs and Features in Control Panel but will not load up even if I block the Microsoft driver from starting .
Does anyone have any ideas?
All thoughts gratefully received!

Realtek drivers have a habit of leaving bits behind when an install goes wrong so I'd suggest you start out with Driver Sweeper to tidy things up: click here
Then download the latest drivers from the Realtek website (I think you have a HD rather than plain AC97 chipset): click here
Do not let Windows install anything but run setup from the driver package. It may then work directly or you may have to reboot and let windows 'find' the drivers that Realtek setup just tried to install.
What is on the ASUS website is fairly old - if these drivers worked with Vista they're really unlikely to work with SP1 !
Good luck, JimF
