Which Sat Nav?

I'd like a sat nav for the car but don't want to have to pay subscriptions every 6 or 12 months to get updates on speed/safety cameras.

Anybody know whether there is a brand name out there that fulfills this criteria?

Thank you in advance

Tom Tom 1 is very good and I have never had a problem, I think problems raise their head when the shortest route is programmed instaed of the quickest. Pocketgpsworld speed camera database is £19 a year and if you are first to report a new camera you get it free for life.

A few years ago updates for Traffic cameras were offered free by Pocket GPS world, but no longer.

However, it seems generally considered that their camera database is the best.

Hi everyone
Hope you can help by recommending the most reasonable or the most effective combination of hardware and software of my intentions.
I am inthe process of buying a 12.1" laptop with bluetooth etc. and wish to use it for Road Navigating especially in Western Europe. My question therefore is this:- Which in your opinion is the most suitable GPS Receiver and "maps" / programme I should consider.
Many thanks in advance

You have a choice of two subscriptions for your Nuvi speed camera data base.

The Garmin Cyclops system has the advantage that its warnings are directional. In other words - you are only warned of a camera if it is monitoring your side of the road. However - I no longer use this system because I find it slow to update with new cameras and it is more expensive than the alternative.

The Pocket GPS World data base costs £19 per year. It seems to be the most up to date system you can buy and has an excellent users forum on their website. The only disadvantage compared with the Garmin system - is that camera warnings are not directional. You are warned of all cameras you are about to pass - whether or not they are pointing your way. This is not the fault of the PGPS system, but a limit imposed by Garmin software which their own system is not limited by.

Thanks for all the help folks.

Occasionally the Nuvi takes us past the destination (ie takes us within 20 yards and past the most direct legal route), right round the town and up a pedestrianised street(but open to disabled and delivery vehicles) to get to our destination. Well, at least it's not a ford in flood.

I'm a little astounded there's no USB data cable included, since POI and safety camera databases are available for it online. Anyhow . . .

Thanks again

AlanHo: quite a few speed cameras in my area are bi-directional; that is, being in the centre of the road, they can be, (and are), turned to face the opposite way.

Covergirl: No USB cable. How mean can they get?; the cost of a USB cable to them must be extremely small.

A similar case is found with printers, when more often than not a cable is not included.
