Camera microphones & loud music

I've got a Sony DSC-T7 camera which is quite a few years old and a little temperamental.
I've recorded lots of loud rock music on it in pubs, just for personal use and occasional discussion with mates.
The mic on the Sony seems to be a different type to those on other cameras, i.e. every other mp3 recorder, camera or phone I've owned seems to distort really badly when the music is anything above acoustic level.
I've not had anything specialist for recording, but do I need to buy another Sony camera in order to get a decent recorded sound? Or is it just this camera? Or what exactly is it that Sony has - is it some circuitry or is it just a special kind of mic?
I don't know - if anyone else knows what I'm on about, please let me know - it might help on my next choice of camera.
Cheers Phil
