Issue with VHS 2 DVD Converter

I bought a VHS 2 DVD Converter in order to copy my VHS videos to DVD as I understand that it is now legal to copy these as long as I own the original and it is only for my own use. However the first Video that I have tried to copy say that it is copy protected so does anyone know how I can overcome this please or have I just wasted my money?

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
