Ipod Volume too low and might need new Battery

Just recently configured a 2Gb Nano I-pod. Got mp3s loaded to it after a hassle with understanding how to use Itunes. Yet to my despair the volume on it is like a whisper when set to full volume. Yes I did use the 'volume limiter'. I firt set it to 9999 and then to 0000, but none of these settings made any difference.

Any other suggestions?

or do I need to replace the re-chargeable battery. If so then where is the best place to buy them?
