How does the DVD player "continue at last stop"

If I press "stop" on the remote, somehow the player knows where to start from when the DVD is next run. It applies even when I have watched a different DVD before I restart. Is the info stored in the player? If so, how much can it hold & for how long. There's nothing in the User Guide. I'm just curious - it's a great feature when you have a DVD that holds several programs e.g.TV box sets
