CD's playing erratically

My CD player (not, I may say, the most recent model) has started to play quite erratically, about twice normal speed, but not regularly - sometimes very briefly the right speed, a second or so, then skipping and juddering on!

I've tried different CDs - but no difference.

Any ideas - or is it just that the Player has had it?

is there any reset option for the processor in the CD Player
